Transforming a plain ranch house with sheetrock and standard 8' ceilings into an Adirondack style, cozy home, per the clients' wishes, without major renovation work (such as adding a second story, redesigning porches, or replacing the sheetrock) required us to literally think inside the box.

LIVING ROOM - The challenge was to bring the outside in, taking maximum advantage of the home's outstanding lake and mountain views and introducing certain design elements - bright bands of color, horizontal beams, a stone fireplace seemingly reaching up as if to a cathedral ceiling - to create the illusion of greater space.

FOYER - The formerly unwelcoming foyer was opened up by removing the wall separating it from the dining area and replacing the industrial-style metal door with one appropriate to the arts & crafts style. To unify spaces, the two-tone color scheme was carried throughout the entire house.

GUEST BEDROOM - Bold wall colors were taken from the Navajo-style blankets . We especially like the play of light created by the wood blinds. Note also how the windows are treated: each view becomes its own framed piece of art.

BASEBOARDS/FLOORS - Wall-to-wall pink carpet was replaced with a warm, richly colored cherry floor. Utilitarian metal baseboards, the bane of modern houses, were covered over. The clients also came to see how incongruous the plastic switchplate covers are - and are having great fun replacing them with an array of artistic ones crafted in birch, wood, slate and tile.

GUEST BATHROOM - The clients wished to freshen up the guest bath at minimal expense. We installed wainscoting, changed the overhead light fixture, hung a handmade rustic mirror and painted the room in a scheme similar to the rest of the house. The most expensive part was the $350 mirror.
